Pre-test qualifications
To take the driver's licence test, you need to :
  • hold a valid learner's licence for the class of vehicle for which you are applying for a driver's licence;
  • have prepared adequately with a qualified driving instructor.
What the test covers
To driving test measures your ability to:
  • Control the vehicle safely and comply with the rules of the road and road traffic signs
    The test consists of:
  • A pre-trip inspection of the vehicle to make sure (mainly visually) that it's roadworthy for the test;
  • For motor cycles there is a riding skills test;
  • For cars and trucks there is a driving test in the testing center yard;
  • If you pass the yard test, you are taken onto public roads to demonstrate that you are competent at driving safely in traffic.

    If you fail any part of the test, the testing session will be discontinued and you will have to apply again to do the test at a later date.
Failure factors
You can be failed for the following reasons: Light and heavy motor vehicles Yard test:
  • Taking longer than 20 minutes to complete the test (30 minutes for heavy vehicles);
  • Being scored more than 50 penalty points in total.
    Road test:
  • Being scored more than the total number of penalty points allowed, calculated at 8 points allowed per minute for both light and heavy motor vehicles.
    Other failure factors
(all vehicle types, including motor cycles):
  • If the vehicle is not roadworthy when you present it for doing the test;
  • If you don't comply with the rules of the road during the test;
  • If you perform a dangerous or uncontrolled action during the test;
  • If you are involved in a collision that you could have avoided.
Additional failure factors for motor cycles
  • If you score more than the allowable number of penalty points in the pre-trip inspection and the skills test;
  • If you or the motor cycle should fall;
  • If you do not wear a suitable crash helmet during the test.
